The Exploitation of Immigrants in the US
It is known to us that the exploitation of immigrants in the US is a tricky problem within this country and it has caused numerous detrimental effects on the vast majority of immigrants over the history. The exploitation of immigrants in the US can be embodied in various aspects, like education, job employment, law enforcement, etc. and the immigrants are always placed in a disadvantaged position when compared with those native-born Americans. It is usually the case when there is an urgent situation of the immigrants but no one is willing to offer help to them. What’s worse, some mean native-born Americans would like to get some benefits from those desperate immigrants at the same time. And the great majority of immigrants are right the victims due to the exploitation in this country toward them all the time. Based on this, it can be easily found that the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US is enduring, serious and urgent. Therefore this paper would like to explore the exploitation of immigrants in the US, hoping that it can help contribute more or less to the solving of the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US.
The Exploitation of Immigrants in the US
Firstly, the capitalism system can account for a great part for the exploitation of immigrants in the US and it is the very capitalism system that leads to so many people entering the U.S. as undocumented immigrants (Classmate Interview). Detailed speaking, the way capitalism affects immigration is that business owners take advantage of undocumented immigrants’ illegal status and pay them little salary. Capitalists exploit immigrants by making them do more work with fewer wages and getting undocumented immigrants fired once the undocumented immigrants complain about that. Thus the capitalism system has made a large number of immigrants being exploited.
<标题> Moreover, Trump’s proposition of the Merit-based Visa system also contributes much to the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US. The more concrete situation is that Trump’s proposed the Merit-based Visa system on Aug 2, 2017 that an alien would accrue points based on education, work experience, family ties to the United States and other attributes and that alien applicants with the highest overall points in a year would be given green cards (Classmate Interview). There is no doubt that the immigrants must have a certain skill if they would like to be admitted into the U.S in the first beginning and keep staying in the U.S. as a legal citizen. But there is no such requirement for the native-born Americans to have any skill, which can well indicate the inequality in law for both the native-born Americans and those immigrants. Or maybe it can be put in another way that the potential exploitation toward the immigrants in the U.S. is still implied in the Trump’s proposition of the Merit-based Visa system.
Apparently, this Merit-based Visa system aims to help remove or address this problem in one way o0r another. However, it just has fallen short. Though this Merit-based Visa system seems no sense of deporting the immigrants, the immigrants have to earn enough points if they would like to be a permanent resident. As a result, the immigrant community will undoubtedly become more competitive than the native-born Americans. Under this condition, those native-born Americans who are not competitive enough will unite together and fight against aliens. Concerning this, we can know that the immigrants will be put into a dilemma. On the one hand, they will not be granted as a permanent resident in the U.S. if they do not work hard to earn enough points for a permanent resident. On the other hand, they will be fought against by those native-born Americans who are not competitive enough, resulting in their difficulty in making a living in the U.S. But actually, it is controversial to say that immigrants are taking away job opportunities of the native people. To put it more specifically, the immigrants simply take the jobs that a lot of people don’t want and they do it for a cheaper wage. Most of the immigrants are desperate mentally and financially when they come to the U.S. Probably all they want is just a better life and earn money to pay for food while they are unable to realize their goal that they have set up at the first place. All they encounter is just the opposite of their expectations and they experience exploitation in many different ways.
Based on all the above, it is obvious that the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US has to be solved as urgently as possible when taking the personal interests and rights of those immigrants into account. However, opinions vary from one another concerning whether the issue of this problem should be regarded as a systemic one or not. As a matter of fact, this problem is definitely a systemic one because it is due to requirements of economic and political system. It is stated by David Bacon that “While the government officials developing and enforcing U.S. immigration policy changed on January 20, the economic system in which they make that policy did not” (David Bacon. 2017), which suggests that the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US is both related with the economic aspect and the political aspect. So a fair knowledge can be obtained that the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US is a systemic one but not a non-systemic one in that it is not a problem caused simply by mismanagement, individuals or wrong decisions.
<标题> Seen from the economic aspect, capitalism determines that the large amount of the world’s resources is privately owned and they are mainly used to make profits for those who own them. According to this, it is not hard to get that capitalism in the U.S. only takes care of the interest of the native-born Americans without taking any regard of the immigrants in this country at all. And that is right why the business owners can take advantage of undocumented immigrants’ illegal status and pay them little salary. Capitalists exploit immigrants by making them do more work with fewer wages and getting undocumented immigrants fired once the undocumented immigrants complain about that. In this sense, the reform of the economic system of this country is significant as for whether the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US can be smoothly removed or addressed in the end.
<标题> And then from the perspective of political aspect, Trump’s immigration policy only targets specific countries and races and it does not cover all the immigrants, leading to some immigrants’ not being guaranteed and protected out of the limited scope of Trump’s immigration policy. Just take his Merit-based Visa system proposed on Aug 2, 2017 as an example. This system has specified that the U.S. has endowed the chances for the immigrants to get green cards while those immigrants have to try hard in various aspects including education, family ties, work experience, etc. in order to really gain the green cards. However, the difficulty for those immigrants to really get green cards can be easy to predict.
Taking the aforementioned economic system and the political policy into consideration, it is obvious that the solution to address the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US belongs to systemic change. That is to say, the reform of the economic system and the political policy has to be enforced in order for the solving of the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US. For one part, the capitalism system has to be abolished for the interests and rights of the immigrants. Instead, an economic system that is equal for both the immigrants and the native-born Americans has to be additionally established in order to help ensure the rights and interests of those immigrants in that this economic system can be deemed as the criteria for them to protect their own interests and rights. For another, Trump has to enlarge the scope of the immigration policy so that the changed immigration policy can play a role in protecting a larger number of immigrants in the U.S. Generally speaking, the society has to pay more attention to those immigrants and such an idea has to be advocated all the time. The joint efforts of the economic and political system are inevitable for the successful solution of the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US. Only in this way can the immigrants actually become independent from the exploitation and can they have the rights to make decisions for themselves and fight for their own life. Otherwise, they may have to keep suffering from the exploitation afterwards.
To sum up, a reasonable conclusion can be drawn that the exploitation of immigrants in the US is definitely an enduring, serious and urgent problem and it has to be tackled as soon as possible. It is as well a systemic one because it is due to requirements of economic and political system, which determines that the solution to address the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US as well belongs to systemic change. There is no doubt that the solution of the issue of the exploitation of immigrants in the US will absolutely calls for the joint efforts of various parties and the whole process of dealing with this issue will undoubtedly be a troublesome and time-consuming one, but efforts still have to be made in order for the interests and rights of the immigrants.
