Three Views for Best Leadership

From the teachings of Ptah Hotep, there are three point of views that as far as I am concerned, can be connected to best theories for leadership.

The first selected theory is about is about integrity and honesty. Ptah Hotep expressed that “if you are a person of trust sent by one great person to another great person, be careful to stick to the essence of the message that you were asked to transmit. Give the message exactly as he gave it to you. Guard against provocative speech which makes one great person angry with another. Just keep to the truth. Do not exceed it. However even though there may have been an out-burst in the message you should not repeat it. Do not malign any one, great or small, the Ka abhors it” (Hilliard III, Williams & Damali).

Leader without integration on the other hand will eventually fail through time. Scheming and corruption will grow without it. The Culture Revolution in China made a counter example that the four leaders made use of instigated people to pursue power centralization without integration. The mess and damages resulted in huge social retrogress for a ten year period and at the end the leaders were recognized as schemers, denied by their people.

This is harder to keep to because being integrated is one matter, yet being wise as well as handling thoughts, consolidating the good will, and taking results into consderation before giving a speech is another level of building trust. Therefore only being a straight man is not good enogh as a leader. One should keep in mind for how to set up the releationship by sending a message that one can be trusted (Convey, 7). Only when a leader is considerate of the whole structure and know wht is to keep and what is to say, can a leader accumulate sufficient trust from others.

There is an instance considered as a counterexample. In ancient China, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang once leaded a great era called Kai Yuan prosperous time, which is considered the most flourishing and thriving era of all Dynesties. Yet in the late life of this emperor he was obsessed with a beautiful concubine and ruled the country with his appetite. He empowered the relatives of this concubine and did whatever he could to please the woman. At last the country was ruined by such ruling and disordered by the Rebellion of An Lu-shan. This gives proof that leading without wisdom and consideration is doomed to fail, because the leader will lose trust of his or her supporters.

The third view selected here is about judging – “if you are a person who judges, listen carefully to the speech of one pleads. Don’t stop the person from telling you everything that they had planned to tell you. A person in distress wants to pour out his or her heart, even more than they want their case to be won. If you are one who stops a person who is pleading, that person will say ‘why does he reject my plea?’ Of course not all that one pleads for can be granted, but a good hearing soothes the heart. The means for getting a true and clear explanation is to listen with knidness” (Hilliard III, Williams & Damali).

The tip being provided here is the wisdom of listening. Also this is one of the vital characters a leader must gain. Listening to his or her staff not only gives the empoyees spsace and time to express themselves, but also offers a great opportunity for communicating and surveying the current situation of one’s leadership. Listening with enough patience and comprehension will give employees the sense of respect and caring, and their value is appreciated (Organizational Behavior, 103). Even the plea or complaints is not reasonable from the prospect of the leader, it suggests the drawbacks and place needs improving for the leadership or the management system.

The King Solomon is a success leader for listeing to his people. He was well recognized as a fair judge with wisdom. And all the extolled choices he made were based on his ability to listen. He knew the power he gained really came from the people he ruled and generated from their words and plea. Therefore the only way to enhance a team environment and to build better leaderhip is to listen. It gives motivations for organization development.
