Response to ‘The Rat Race’
As highly acknowledged as the sole comics that won the Pulitzer Prize, ‘The Rat Race’ was a remarkable work of Atkinson Spiegelman. By referring the passage of the response to the ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’ from S. Philips as lens, the article analyzes the text ‘ The Rat Race’ from three continuous levels and attaches the thesis of the article to the topic of human nature. First of all, it is the characteristic cold painting style that presented as abstracted lines and gloomy colors. Moreover, it come the condensed words, which showed the implication of the text directly. Lastly, the essential connotation will be taken emphasized consideration.
First of all, from the perspective of painting style, the painting style of ‘The Rat Race’ was cold and unique. To demonstrate the historical theme cleverly and profoundly, ‘The Rat Race’ applied the images of animals, such as the rat, cat and pig to show the Jews, the Polish and the Nazis in the war. Obviously, the work utilized anthropopathic animals to reveal the heavy theme of history and human nature. Specifically, it can be divided two parts to analyze the painting style of this text. On one hand, the images of the animals were strange and abstracted; in the meantime, the lines that formed the images were variable and novel, which manifested the emotion of the Atkinson Spiegelman indirectly. Take the races in the first chapter ‘The Chief’ as an example. Both of the modeling and the behaviors of the images of races showed the actual psychological situation of them (Atkinson, 1992). Clearly, not only did the lines show the unique and novel painting style from the microscope view, but also the images of the paintings also manifested the unique concept of the design of the painting. On the other hand, the tone of it also manifested its strange style. It was obvious and evident that the whole tonal of it was gloomy and inspiring. From the constitution of the color, it was composed of the black and white simply, which made direct contribution to the heaviness and the deepness of the work. Then, from the aspect of distribution of the colors, it was designed realistically and strictly. Resulted from such characteristics, the painting style of it was manifested obviously. In general, from the view of visual, the work used the comic that has unique painting style to convey the theme of war and humanity.
Moreover, the condensed words also aroused my inspiration. As the main expression form of the work was comic, the words of it were desired to be simple and meaningful spontaneously. Furthermore, “The Rat Race” from Atkinson Spiegelman spread the plots around the relationship of author and his father with condensed words, which showed the psychology of the characters evidently. Furthermore, the words of ‘The Rat Race’ could also be discussed from three dimensions. From the dimension of rhetoric, instead of applying countless vivid rhetoric methods, ‘The Rat Race’ used only a small amount of rhetoric methods and devoted to improving the connotation of the words (Atkinson, 1992). It was the simple words that created the touching plots and manifested the authentic emotion of the author. From the dimension of the style of the words, it was bound to be peaceful and calm. Take a typical sentence from ‘The Rat Race’ to prove this issue, ‘If you let them stay together in such cabin, they would starve to die’, it was such simple and authentic words that depicted the situation and inner world of the survivors, which reflected the challenges from humanity that related to the cruel war. Obviously, the calm and peaceful words were presented with reasonable rhythm, which directly resulted in bitterness in the work. Undoubtedly, both of the organized plots and sincere emotions should be partly attributed to the unique style of words in ‘The Rat Race’. Later, from the dimension of the described contents of the text, it was undoubtedly that the deep implication of the text was profound. Not only did it relate to the meaningful words, but also it depended highly on the coordination of the pictures and the words. Actually, the text used simple words to narrate the miserable experience in the war period. In the meantime, the words also plated vital and indispensable in the narration of the experiences in the war, which also revealed the crimes of the Nazis to some extent.
Last but not least, from the perspective of essential connotation, there were three main arguments in this part. First of all, in the book, Atkinson Spiegelman conveyed his sincere emotion for his father and the significance of affection. By spreading the plots around their relationship and the experience of escaping, the author expressed the significance of love, especially under the threat from the war and other disasters. It was the sincere affection that was succeeded in assisting people to live in front of the deadly challenges. What’s more, the author also revealed the brutal crimes of the Nazis on the Jews. By stating the inhuman encounters and miserable experience in the escape process during the war with his true feeling, the author revealed the crimes of the Nazis as well as the inhuman social environment at that time, which demonstrated a heavy historical theme and aroused thinking from people on this issue successfully. At last, ‘The Rat Race’ also devoted to showing the human nature. Normally, the human nature could be manifested with the guarantee from the social morality. However, when people encountered the threat from external disasters of living; the human nature would be vanished. Here was a representative instance from the work to clarity the natural of humanity, ‘ In recent years, many Germans felt ashamed for the reason that their countries has made unforgivable crimes in the Nazis war, however, in fact, every people should be ashamed for the reason that they were the human’. As indicated by the book, in order to gain opportunities for living, people ignored the humanity and sincere friendships. In general, the book also revealed the profound theme of humanity and advocated authentic humanity with love in the society.
On the whole, the lens of the analysis of ‘The Rat Race’ referred the lens of the response of the ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’ from my partner S. Philips. . On one side, the work from him provided an enlightenment of the lens of analysis. Clearly, the work of him adopted the layered structure to analyze the article. Firstly, it analyzed it from the view of vision by discussing the details of the described images. In this part, his passage showed the realization of the article from the superficial view. Consequently, my response to ‘The Rat Race’ referred the angle of analyzing of it and developed it into the whole style of the work, which could improve the whole comprehension of the text. Then, it analyzed it from the view of the theme. In this part, my response referred its angle of social value. In spite of the analysis of the content of the article, it also analyzed the characters with the view of social criticism. On the other side, the work from my partner also inspired me with the thinking of the human nature. In his work, he revealed the issue of human nature from the aspect of individual by creating the images of the characters in the work. Correspondingly, in my response to ‘The Rat Race’, the human nature and the issue of humanity in the wars were also emphasized. Furthermore, the response also related the human nature to the sincere love in the process of analysis.
